Chemical stability of polyester
Release time:
2023-02-25
Summary:
① Acid resistance. Polyester is very stable to acids (especially organic acids). After soaking in a 5% hydrochloric acid solution at 100℃ for 24h, or in a 70% sulfuric acid solution at 40℃ for 72h, its strength remains undiminished. However, it cannot withstand prolonged exposure to concentrated nitric acid or concentrated sulfuric acid at room temperature.
② Alkali resistance. The ester groups on polyester macromolecules are easily hydrolyzed by alkali. Exposure to concentrated alkalis at room temperature, or dilute alkalis at high temperatures, can damage the fibers. Polyester is only relatively stable to dilute or weak alkalis at low temperatures.
③ Solvent resistance. Polyester has strong resistance to general non-polar organic solvents, and even strong resistance to polar organic solvents at room temperature. For example, soaking in acetone, chloroform, toluene, trichloroethylene, or carbon tetrachloride at room temperature for 24h does not reduce fiber strength. When heated, polyester is soluble in phenol, xylene, o-dichlorophenol, benzyl alcohol, nitrobenzene, and mixed solvents such as phenol-carbon tetrachloride, phenol-chloroform, and phenol-toluene.
