Twisting is one of the purposes of spinning, and the amount of twist is an important indicator for measuring yarn performance, generally expressed by twist degree. Twist degree refers to the number of twists (i.e., helical turns) per unit length of yarn. The unit length varies depending on the type of yarn, and its measurement unit can be expressed as "twists/10cm" or "twists/m". The former is used for cotton and cotton-type chemical fiber yarns, while the latter is used for worsted wool yarns and chemical filament yarns. Twist degree affects indicators such as yarn strength, stiffness, elasticity, and shrinkage. As the twist degree of the yarn increases, its strength increases, but the twist degree cannot exceed a certain value; otherwise, its strength will decrease. This value is called the critical twist of the yarn. Yarns of different raw materials have different critical twists. The softness, elasticity, and shrinkage of the yarn are also closely related to the twist degree. Generally, under the premise of meeting strength requirements, the smaller the yarn twist degree, the better, because increasing the twist will make the yarn feel harder, reduce elasticity, and increase shrinkage. This is why filament yarns generally try to have no twist or less twist. In addition, twist also affects the bulk density and diameter of the yarn. The twisting action increases the compactness of the yarn. Within a certain range, the bulk density of the yarn increases with increasing twist, and the diameter of the yarn decreases with increasing twist, thereby changing the fabric's covering power and comfort.
In summary, yarn twist should be selected according to different fabric uses. For example, warp yarns need to have higher strength, so the twist should be larger; weft yarns and knitting yarns need to be soft, so the twist should be smaller; yarns for woven and knitted pile fabrics should have a smaller twist to facilitate napping; thin and crisp crepe fabrics require characteristics of slipperiness, crispness, and freshness, so the yarn twist should be larger.
